Studena Dam is a 53 m high concrete gravity buttress dam built on Struma River, at 0.5 km from Studena village and at about 15 km upstream of the town of Pernik, Sofia region, Bulgaria. It was built in the period 1950 to 1953 with main purpose: provision of potable and industrial water supply of the settlements in the area of Pernik, power production (HPP), and flood protection of arable lands downstream of the dam. The reservoir is performing multi-annual flow regulation and was first impounded in 1954.
Purpose: Provision of potable and industrial water supply of the settlements in the area of Pernik, power production (HPP), and flood protection of arable lands downstream of the dam.
Location: Studena village, Bulgaria
Client: Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works, Bulgaria
Services provided: Site Investigations, detailed design and bidding documents.
During the long period of operation, more than 50 years, extensive information and experience have been obtained on the dam behavior. This information, together with the results from the technical visual inspections that were periodically carried out, served as a basis for the decision taken in 2004 by Bulgarian Government to implement a complete rehabilitation of the dam and its appurtenant structures. The conclusion of the specialists was that it is required due to the deteriorated state of the structures as a result of the long period of operation that could threaten their functioning and the water supply of the settlements in the area of Pernik.
This was the reason The Government of Bulgaria, in cooperation with the World Bank, to include the rehabilitation of Studena Dam in the Municipal Infrastructure Development Project which main purpose is to improve the quality of the water supply and sewerage services in several regions of Bulgaria. Component 3 of this project provides for completion and rehabilitation of 4 dams designed for potable water supply purpose, as one of them is Studena Dam. In 2012, following a public procurement procedure, Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works awarded to Sweco Energoproekt Jsc a contract for provision of the following consultant services for Studena Dam:
Analysis and examination of the current state of Studena Dam and preparation of conceptual design for the dam rehabilitation;
Preparation of detailed design and bidding documents for the dam rehabilitation;
Preparation of working drawings;
Designer’s supervision during implementation of rehabilitation works.
At the end of 2015, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works approved the working drawings submitted by Sweco Energoproekt Jsc and according to the present time schedule for implementation of the rehabilitation, it will be finished up to the end of year 2017.
The rehabilitation of Studena Dam that was designed in the late 40-ties by the previous generations of engineers at the state-owned enterprise Hydroenergoproekt, established in 1947 and whose successor is Sweco Energoproekt Jsc, will lead to ensuring the water supply in the area of Pernik for a long period of time, while providing the safety of the dam and its appurtenant structure in a seismically active region (example: the earthquake in 2010 with epicenter close the town of Pernik.)
