Tsankov Kamak Hydropower Project

Tsankov Kamak Hydropower Project, covering Tsankov Kamak Dam and Tsankov Kamak Hydro Power Plant (HPP), is located in the Rhodope Mountains, on Vacha River, Smolyan region, Bulgaria. This is the middle stage, built last, of Dospat – Vacha hydropower scheme. This complex scheme was developed at several phases, starting from the 60-ties of 20th century, and is designed to serve several purposes: water supply, irrigation, and power generation.

Description

Tsankov Kamak Hydropower Project, covering Tsankov Kamak Dam and Tsankov Kamak Hydro Power Plant (HPP), is located in the Rhodope Mountains, on Vacha River, Smolyan region, Bulgaria. This is the middle stage, built last, of Dospat – Vacha hydropower scheme. This complex scheme was developed at several phases, starting from the 60-ties of 20th century, and is designed to serve several purposes: water supply, irrigation, and power generation.

The main components of the project are: 131 m-high arch concrete dam, with double-curvature, and a hydropower plant with 85 MW installed capacity. Dam spillway is front type, with 4 bays, equipped with tainter gates and design overflow discharge Q = 1 414 m3/s. Dam’s crest length is 468 m and its concrete volume is 465 000 m3.

The hydropower plant consists of water-intake structure, 600 m long underground penstock, powerhouse with 2 units, each 42.5 MW installed capacity, 110 kV switchyard, and a tailrace channel.

Development

In November 2001, Bulgarian National Electric Company (NEK-EAD), following a public-procurement procedure, awarded an assignment to Energoproekt–Hydropower Ltd, whose successor is Sweco Energoproekt Jsc, for preparation of Basic Design for all structures and facilities of Tsankov Kamak Hydropower Project. The Basic Design was prepared in the period from November 2001 of July 2003.

In 2004, Energoproekt–Hydropower Ltd signed a contract with Verbundplan GmbH, Austria (presently Pöyry Energy GmbH) for preparation of detailed designs and execution of designer’s supervision during construction, according to Bulgarian legislation, as co-designer to Verbundplan GmbH. Construction works on Tsankov Kamak Hydropower Project started in April 2004 and the project was commissioned in 2011.

Sweco Energoproekt Jsc carried out the investigations and prepared a large part of the design documents for this project, as follows:

  • Basic design for all project structures and facilities;

  • Preparation of complete detailed design, including designer’s supervision on site during construction, according to Bulgarian legislation;

  • Geological and topographic investigations, surveying and mapping during the whole construction period;

  • Preparation of as-built drawings and documentation.

Building Tsankov Kamak Hydropower Project contributed to the improvement of the overall operation of Dospat – Vacha hydropower scheme by increasing its efficiency. Also, it added complementary power output of 200 GWh per year (Tsankov Kamak HPP) and additional accumulated volumes of water (Tsankov Kamak reservoir).
